Why “Careful” Is in the Name

People ask me about the name all the time, so let’s start there. I’m Doug Schaefer, and I named the company after the one thing I kept finding missing on other people’s moving jobs: care. Before 2011 I spent the better part of a decade riding in the right seat of a Midwest van line, loading trucks for a living. I saw the corners that get cut when a crew is rushing to make a second job across town — the dresser slid across a hardwood floor instead of lifted, the table leg that didn’t get wrapped because somebody was out of pads. I told myself that if I ever ran the show, every piece would get wrapped and written down, no exceptions. That’s the whole origin story. One used truck, a roll of pads, and a rule I refused to bend.

From Irvington to the Whole Metro

I grew up on the east side, around Irvington, and that’s where the first truck was parked. Fifteen years on, Careful Way runs seven trucks and a staff of fourteen, with nine movers out on the road on a busy week. We’ve loaded out of garden apartments off Mass Ave, hauled grand pianos up the freight elevators of downtown high-rises, and carried four-bedroom houses from Meridian-Kessler to the new builds going up in Carmel and Westfield. The footprint grew. The rule didn’t.

The People, Not the Pitch

I’d rather tell you who answers the phone than recite a list of adjectives. Stephanie Wells runs the office and probably knows the answer to your question before you finish asking it. Marcus Boyd handles dispatch, which is the unglamorous reason our trucks actually show up in the window we promised. On the road, three crew chiefs carry the work: Tony Reyes has run our piano and specialty jobs since 2014, Cole Barnett owns the long-distance routes, and Andrea Foster has a sixth sense for which Lockerbie Square stairwell or Broad Ripple porch is going to fight us. Every one of them is on our payroll, in uniform, background-checked. We do not call a labor pool the morning of your move and hope for the best.

How a Careful Way Job Actually Runs

You get one flat-rate number in writing, and that’s the price — no meter ticking while a crew catches their breath, no “heavy item” surprise invented at the curb. We never hand your move off to a stranger; the truck in your driveway carries our name and our DOT and MC numbers, and the same crew that loads you in Indianapolis is the crew that unloads you, whether that’s across town or up I-65. Everything gets blanket-wrapped and inventoried before it moves, and if we put a mark on something, we make it right — that’s the written no-damage guarantee, and it’s backed by $1M in cargo coverage.

We Actually Live Here

There’s a real difference between a company that pulls up a map and one that has moved someone off that street before. We know the limestone steps on the older homes in Irvington and Bates-Hendricks, the one-way grid around Monument Circle, the parking you can’t take for granted on a race weekend in May, and the way an ice storm turns a simple Saturday move into a salt-and-tarp operation. We cover everything inside I-465 and out to Fishers, Noblesville, Greenwood, Avon, Plainfield, Brownsburg, Zionsville, and the rest of the metro. Call (888) 711-4778 and you’ll be talking to somebody who’s actually driven those streets in the snow.
