What apartment moves run across Indianapolis and Central Indiana
Apartments price differently than houses. What floor you are on, how wide the stairwell is, whether there is an elevator to coordinate, and whatever the building demands before move day all push the number around. Careful Way Moving runs apartment and condo jobs across the metro every week, and each piece still gets wrapped and inventoried like it would in any other move. Where the floor changes the price
A third-floor walk-up costs more for one plain reason: every armload spends longer on the stairs. Elevator buildings settle in around second-floor pricing, because even with the lift we are still booking the elevator window and shielding the shared hallways on the way through.
Flat-rate ranges by unit and floor
Here are the standard flat-rate bands for local apartment moves around Indianapolis. Baked into your rate: the truck, the crew, blankets, dollies, floor runners, and padding for the stairwells. Nothing hidden.

The line items a house move never has
Apartment and condo moves bring building-specific costs that a single-family job simply skips. Plan for these on top of the crew:
- A Certificate of Insurance, often shortened to COI. Most downtown towers and professionally managed buildings want a COI from your mover on file before move day. We turn those around same-day at no charge. If the building also runs its own move-in/move-out fee, expect $125–$325 paid straight to them.
- Freight-elevator window. High-rises around the Mile Square and along the canal often require a reserved freight elevator, sometimes against a refundable deposit ($225–$575). Reserving the time slot is on us; the deposit stays purely a matter between you and the building.
- The long carry. There is no long-carry fee on our quotes, but when the truck cannot get within roughly 75 feet of your door, the job simply takes a little longer, and the flat rate already accounts for that.
- Curb-side parking. Some downtown Indianapolis blocks need a temporary meter bag or a reserved no-parking zone through the city, around $30 a day. Give us 72 hours and we file the paperwork.
- Boxes and packing. Need supplies? We pass them along at cost; figure roughly $90 for a standard 1-bedroom kit. Want us to pack it all? Have us pack the whole place and a one-bedroom opens around $325.
The Indy buildings our crew works every week
By now our team knows the access quirks, the parking, and the elevator routine at the kinds of places Indianapolis renters actually live:
- Downtown high-rises and converted lofts. The towers and old warehouses of the Mile Square, Mass Ave, and the Wholesale District, with their loading docks, COIs, and reserved elevators. Floor runners and door-jamb guards travel with us on each job.
- Broad Ripple and Fountain Square doubles. The older two- and three-unit homes with skinny staircases and nothing but street parking out front. Stairwell runners and corner guards come standard.
- Suburban garden communities. The apartment complexes off Keystone, 116th, and US-31 in Carmel, Fishers, and Greenwood, with real truck access and a gate code. Usually the quickest apartment jobs we run.
- Campus-area units. Around IUPUI, Butler, and Broad Ripple, where parking is tight and everyone’s move-out date lands the same week. We book early to stay ahead of the crush.
Common questions on apartment cost
Does each flight of stairs add to the bill?
No. You will not find a stairway charged out separately on the bill. How high up you live nudges the overall set price since the carry eats more time, yet it is never broken out as a charge of its own.
My building demands proof of insurance — then what?
Behind every job sits $1M of liability and full workers comp, and your property manager or HOA gets a Certificate of Insurance from us the same day, free of charge. Just pass along their contact when you book.
Is it possible to clear one place and settle into the next on a single day?
Yes. Two stops in a single day is routine for us — one crew empties the old unit and fills the new one without handing off. Drop both the pickup and drop-off addresses into the request and we’ll price it tighter.
What is the process for securing a parking permit for the truck?
Out on a downtown block, the city charges roughly $30 a day to reserve a temporary no-parking stretch. Give us 72 hours or more and we submit the paperwork for you.
